Giant Crayfish pictures

 Giant Crayfish is so rare nowadays. In the past, there were giant crayfishes that weighed more than 10 pounds. The largest crayfish used to be the Tasmanian giant crayfish. A new species of giant crayfish has been found in a creek in southern Tennessee. This new species is called Barbicambarus Simmonsi and is about 5 inches long and has a bearded antennae, called setae, covered with fine bristles. Aquatic biologists from the UIUC discovered the new crayfish in the deepest part of Shoal Creek. Enjoy looking at the pictures of this giant crayfish that are collected from various sources.

 There are about 600 species of crawfish are found in the world. Two new species of crawfish are found every year. Barbicambarus simmonsi is nearly 5 inches long—almost twice the size of a typical crayfish usually found in the US. This species has a a bearded antennae covered with fine bristles that is said to enhance their sensory abilities to find its way and to find food. This part of Tennessee is known to be polluted so finding a giant crayfish in this area is promising. Fresh water species around the world are going extinct faster due to over fishing and pollution. Researchers worked very hard and long to find this crayfish underneath a bridge.
